Afternoon in Ioannina Fortress

Enormous fortress on Lake Pamvotis. Hellenistic walls topped with Byzantine walls finished with a Ottoman walls finally rebuilt under Ali Pasha two hundred years ago. Only one of two “living fortresses” in Greece- the other being Rhodes.

Two citadels within the fortress, each with its own mosque.

In earlier times, like Jerusalem, divided into different communities. Only the Orthodox community remains…Muslims left 1922 or earlier and the Jewish community was transported to Auschwitz in 1944.

One Romaniot synagogue survived and its valuables were restored after the few survivors returned in 1946.

Excellent tour broke down numerous unusual traditions of this community, of whom only about 35 are left.
