Archaeology Near Thessaloniki

A day visiting Macedonian sites from around the 4th century BC. First Aigai, now Vergina, capital during the classical period where the tumulus holding royal tombs of Philip II (father of Alexander the Great) and Alexander IV were excavated about 40 years ago.

Followed by Pella which was founded by Philip II and expanded with riches sent from Alexander’s conquest of Persia. Although enormous size only two homes and parts of the Agora have been excavated. Below are from the House of Dionysus with mosaics that have been removed to the nearby Archaeological Museum.
