Day One: Short, With Detours

Easing into the walk on day one. Only 7 miles Chepstow to Tintern … so added a couple of detours given the glorious weather.

First an exploration of Chepstow Castle. The oldest stone castle in Great Britain and not destroyed during the Civil War.

Impressive setting above the Wye.

Detours at at Lancaut Nature Reserve and to visit a church at Tideham before rejoining a well preserved section of Offa’s Dyke.

Good views of Tintern Abbey on a busy holiday weekend from Devils Pulpit.

Especially poignant to visit Tintern same week that Notre Dame burned. An instructive reminder that the spiritual and artistic legacy is not so easily destroyed.
